West is best but midgies suck

Kinlocheven camp site is truly beautiful. Located on the shores of Loch Leven and it was a great spot to park up our rooftop camper for the night with the kids. A BBQ and a paddle on the loch and we were all blissed out.

A red deer swum over the eat the luscious grass on the camp site. Too good to be true right?!

Then the sun set… arghh… we were not prepared for the onslaught of midge! Clouds and clouds of the little critters. Thank goodness for the van with closing windows – if we had been tent bound I might have cried.

In the morning we decided a midge safe zone was the white water activities at Kinlochleven with river tubbing and river bugs which are mini inflatables. The kids had a blast having a splash and the guide from Vertical Descents was awesome.

In the afternoon we booked on a trip to climb the via ferrata, also at Kinlochleven which involves a climb up the cliff alongside the Grey Mares tail waterfall. It is exposed but you are clipped in at all times so feel super safe. There were cable bridges to cross the gorge at height and zip lines to add to the adrenalin buzz.

Happy and tried children and a less midgie night (thank you wind we love you) back at the campsite in the rooftop camper to end our weekend in the wild west.
